Graphic Design

The graphic design, or ‘look and feel’ of a website sets the visitor’s mood as soon as they land on the home page. It refers to the colour scheme, layout and the overall aesthetic appearance of the site. Graphic design is subject to trends and fashions. So a website that may have had a cutting edge look and feel when it was launched could look dated within two years.

In this section we evaluate:

  • The visitor’s immediate impression on landing on the home page. Research shows that you have less than four seconds to make a good impression and keep visitors on your site after they land on the home page.
  • The colour schemes aesthetic value and consistency with company branding.
  • Layouts of pages – are they easy to follow and consistent throughout the site?
  • Text Legibility – are fonts used well?
  • Use of Graphics – are images used effectively and tastefully?

Content

On the web, ‘Content is King’. It is the useful information that people visiting your website expect to find. So the quality of your content is critical to how your business is perceived and how long visitors stay on your site.

  • Volume – is there sufficient copy to be of value to visitors and does it contain enough keywords for search engines?
  • Currency and Quality – is the copy up-to-date and of a high quality, including grammar and spelling?

Navigation

Navigation refers to the ease with which visitors can find relevant content on your site.

  • Is navigation throughout the site clear and intuitive to visitors?
  • Is there a sitemap to assist visitors and search engines?
  • Do navigation buttons behave as expected?
  • Can search engine software navigate the site?
  • Are there any broken links?

Search Engine Optimisation

How any website performs in search engines is integral to the value of the site itself. This is called Search Engine Optimisation (SEO). The SEO effectiveness of a website is measured by how it ‘ranks’ in search results for given keyword searches. This is often the section where we identify the greatest weaknesses with websites. If your website doesn’t perform well in search engines most web users will not find it.

  1. How does the site rank in Google for given keyword searches?
  2. Are Meta tags page titles and content headings used effectively?
  3. Is content written in a search engine friendly structure and format?
  4. Do external sites link to yours, affecting your rankings?

Accessibility & Usability

Accessibility refers to how your website displays in different browsers, at different screen resolutions. The web browser market is current dominated by four applications: Internet Explorer versions 6 and 7 (74% combined); Firefox (19%); Safari (6%). A site that works well in one browser may not work as intended in another. The growth in popularity of Firefox in particular presents a challenge for sites that were developed for and/or only tested in Internet Explorer.

  • Does the site render as intended in the main browsers at the most popular screen resolutions?
  • Do pages load in an acceptable
  • Do pages print as they appear on screen?
  • Does your site display as intended on a mobile phone browser – an increasingly relevant medium?

Interactivity

Interactivity refers to provision for the site visitor to engage with your business through your website. This could mean anything from sending an e-mail to purchasing a product.

  • Is visitor feedback facilitated intuitively?
  • Are there appropriately placed prompts for visitors to take a desired action, like make an enquiry or purchase?
  • Does the site use a contact form with suitable fields to harvest valuable business information?
  • Are any purchasing processes intuitive and easy to use?
  • Are there any concerns about shopping cart security?

Domain Name & Hosting

Your domain name is an invaluable asset that should not be taken for granted. When things go wrong here they go badly wrong and can have a disastrous impact on your business.

  • Domain Name Registration – is it in your name and when does it expire?
  • E-mail – are your e-mail addresses consistent with your domain name?
  • Server Hosting – Are you paying too much for Windows hosting where Linux would do?
